Shibbir Ahmed, New York: International Mother Language Day and Ekushey February were observed in front of the United Nations Headquarters in alignment with Bangladesh time. The event has been held continuously for 35 years, with this year’s program marked by the youngest participant placing floral tributes at a symbolic Shaheed Minar. Despite heavy rain and unfavorable weather, attendees gathered to honor the day through songs, poetry recitations, and discussions.

The discussion session was organized by the Muktadhara Foundation and led by its founder and CEO, Biswajit Saha. Speakers included retired UN senior economist Dr. Nazrul Islam, also the convener of the New York International Bangla Book Fair 2026, along with community leaders Abdur Rahim Badsha, Siraj Uddin Ahmed, Zahir Uddin, and Bijoy Saha.

Marking the 35th anniversary of the observance, Bangladesh’s newly appointed Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury delivered a video message. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of the Bangla language and cultural heritage on the global stage, describing Ekushey as a symbol of sacrifice, pride, and future commitment. The message was read by community worker Shakhawat Ali.

Dr. Nazrul Islam highlighted the significance of organizing Ekushey events and book fairs at the UN premises since 1992 and their growing influence within the Bangladeshi diaspora. He also reflected on the Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War, and Bangladesh’s independence.

A special cultural segment featured three iconic Ekushey songs performed in chorus, including “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February.” The performances were accompanied by tabla artist Haradhan Karmakar. Another song, “Dhon Dhanye Pushpe Bhora,” was performed on guitar by Kabya, while the poem “Ekushey Agun Ronger Pakhi” was recited by Bhasha Saha.

Young participants from the new generation attended the event and paid their respects despite the harsh weather. The program began with a one-minute silence in honor of the language martyrs.

At the conclusion, Biswajit Saha expressed gratitude to the Cultural Affairs Minister for his message. Representatives from various community organizations, including Times Square Durga Utsav Association, Bronx Society, John Jay College Bangladeshi Student Association, Bangalir Chetana Mancha, Muktadhara Foundation, and Abahani Club, along with community leaders and activists, placed floral tributes.
