Shibbir Ahmed, UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — Bangladesh’s Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Shaikh Rabiul Alam, has reaffirmed his government's pledge to slash road traffic fatalities and injuries by 50 percent by the end of the decade.Speaking before world leaders at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety, Minister Alam detailed a comprehensive wave of legislative, policy, and technological overhauls currently underway across Bangladesh. These updates align with the United Nations Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.

To meet these targets, the Bangladeshi delegation highlighted new state infrastructure plans, including the rollout of artificial intelligence-driven speed management systems, upgraded emergency post-crash medical response networks, and dedicated highway safety designs engineered specifically to protect vulnerable pedestrians.

Crucially, Minister Alam announced that Bangladesh is on track to finalize, endorse, and pass a comprehensive, standalone Road Safety Law by December 2027. This upcoming legislation will fully integrate the internationally recognized "Safe System Approach" into domestic law.The high-level Bangladeshi delegation at UN Headquarters also includes Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque, Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Road Safety Project Director Mohammad Shabbir Hasan Khan.In addition to his address to the main assembly, Minister Alam is scheduled to co-chair a multilateral side event focusing on cross-sector coordination and sharing successful strategies for reducing highway mortality rates alongside other member states.
