Shibbir Ahmed, New York: The intersection of Beach Avenue and East 172nd Street in the Bronx, New York City, will now be known as "Detective First Grade Didarul Islam Way." On Saturday (July 18), the street was officially named in honor of the Bangladeshi-American police officer who was shot and killed by a gunman.

Despite inclement weather, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, high-ranking New York City and police department officials, Didarul Islam's wife, children, family members, and Bangladeshi community leaders gathered for the street sign unveiling, creating an emotional atmosphere.

On July 28 of last year, NYPD Officer Didarul Islam was killed by a gunman while on security duty at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan. He was posthumously promoted to "Detective First Grade."

Islam resided in Parkchester, Bronx, with his family. His third child, Arham, now 11 months old, was born shortly after his passing. His other two children are Ahiyan and Azhan. The New York City Council renamed the street to honor his memory.

Recalling Islam's heroism at the ceremony, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, "This street will now bear the name of a man who made New York his home and gave his life protecting it."
